"Do you have IKEA in Australia?"

The people I see and who see me. The faces I know.

I had to say something-PH bikes

I sent an email to this fixed gear bike company outlining my outrage at their pamphlet which displayed women in an unfair way. I also took photos of myself to prove a point. It goes as follows:

Hello,

I went to Sydney last month and went into the Sable & Argent store on George street. I loved the look of your bikes, the frames are really well designed and aesthetically pleasing. I picked up your pamphlet to take home with me to Perth but was really shocked to see that the only people you had on the bikes were boys. The girl model wasn’t even going to get on the bike (no shoes/no bra) to ride it. I just felt this is not a true representation of how fixed gear riding should be.

I know there are a lot more guys that ride than girls but, girls still ride! It’s not a hate email, I love what you produce it was just the way you advertised the bikes, who they’re for and what they’re meant for. I took some amateur photos of myself doing similar things you had the guys doing (on a self-timer) just to prove that you don’t need to portray girls on bikes the way you did. It seemed she was just the girlfriend of one of the guys. Also, I wouldn’t buy the “Ultimate women’s fixie” she is on, what are you supposed to do on a frame that shape? They’d probably have to ride freewheel. You couldn’t do the same things you could on a regular one and its clearly been produced so you have one product for girls, you don’t even have girls clothing on your site. However, if you think we all wear what she is wearing when we ride then you’re hugely mistaken.
Wouldn’t you want to appeal to a wider market range to sell more of your bikes? Otherwise I think you’re limiting yourself.”We are in a world where women have earned equal standing” so why not sell bikes to women the same way you sell them to men?
Thanks for your time,
Steph Larkin
Please check out their website www.potentialofhydrogen.com.au to see what I mean about the boy Vs girl thing.
I took photos to imitate the same stances the guys were doing in their pamphlet just to show they could of used a girl doing the same sort of stuff. They just showed her standing in front of the bike barefoot and with no bra looking ‘pretty’. Does anyone ride like that??
and then mine on the next post…
